Student-athletes from Cardinal and Independence have been selected as the Varsity Travel Players of the Week for the week ending Sept. 30.

Each student-athlete was nominated by his or her coach.

FOOTBALL

Robert ArtripRobert Artrip, Independence

  • Name: Robert Artrip
  • School: Independence
  • Grade: 12
  • Stats: Carried 35 times for 246 yards and four touchdowns and also completed 17-of-21 passes for 117 yards and a touchdown
  • Coach’s Quote: “Robert was the key for us (in a win over Berkshire),” said Independence coach Rick Adams. “This was his best game at quarterback. He showed a lot of poise in the pocket and made the right decisions.”

Trey ShirkeyTrey Shirkey, Cardinal

  • Name: Trey Shirkey
  • School: Cardinal
  • Grade: 12
  • Stats: Carried 20 times for 220 yards and three scores and also recorded five tackles
  • Coach’s Quote: “In the first game of the year and on his first carry of the year, Trey Shirkey fractured both his tibia and fibula,” said Cardinal coach Eric Cardinal. “The first half of his senior season rolled by with the young man on the sidelines. Finally, Trey was cleared to return to play. With a week of practice under his belt and feeling at ease back on the field, Trey ran for 220 yards on 20 carries, scoring three TDs and a 2 point conversion. ‘Welcome back, Trey,’ said the Huskies game announcer at the end of the game.”

BOYS SOCCER

Ethan ManelskiEthan Manelski, Independence

  • Name: Ethan Manelski
  • School: Independence
  • Grade: 11
  • Stats: Recorded seven saves with two shutouts in two games
  • Coach’s Quote: “Ethan made some huge saves in our district match against Elyria Catholic,” said Independence coach Ryan MacRaild. “In a tight half, 1-0, he kept the Panthers off the board and made three big saves to keep a clean sheet all while fighting a flu bug.”

GIRLS SOCCER

Riccela DiGeronimoRiccela DiGeronimo, Independence

  • Name: Riccela DiGeronimo
  • School: Independence
  • Grade: 10
  • Stats: Scored one goal each in wins over Wellington and Berkshire
  • Coach’s Quote: “Riccela has recently moved to a new role on the field,” said Independence coach Bryan Less. “Her goal against Wellington was an effort play where she beat two defenders to a rebound. Her free kick against Berkshire was perfectly placed and with power. It went right above the goalie’s hands. She also just missed another free kick in the game. She is playing good defense and getting her teammates involved in the offense.”

VOLLEYBALL

Lexi ProkopiusLexi Prokopius, Independence

  • Name: Lexi Prokopius
  • School: Independence
  • Grade: 12
  • Stats: Recorded 34 kills, 17 service points and nine digs in three matches, including a win over top-ranked Huron
  • Coach’s Quote: “The four-year varsity starter has become one of senior leaders,” said Independence coach Tony Messina. “Her hard work is a great example to our younger players.”
