VASJ qualifies for five finals at regional track meet

    -

Villa Angela-St. Joseph advanced to the Division III Navarre Regional finals in five of nine events on May 27 at Fairless High School.

Individually, freshman Kynadi Byers qualified for the finals in the 100M with a prelim time of 13.04. Senior Toni Beuck qualified for the finals in the 400M with a time of 1:02.00.

The girls 4x100M relay also will run for a spot in Columbus on Friday night after qualifying with a time of 51.92. Dena Pullem, Jordan Walker, Taylor Parker and Byers made up the relay for the Vikings.

On the boys side, both short relay teams qualified for the finals. VASJ’s 4x100M finished with a preliminary time of 44.81. Tre-Shon Walker, John Hearn, LaRon Jones and Gaston Dowdley will run for a state berth on Friday night.

The 4x200M relay team of Andre George, Hearn, Jones and Dowdley qualified for Friday’s finals with a time of 1:34.45.

VASJ coach Dan LaRocco said he is confident the Vikings will be well represented at Jesse Owens Stadium in Columbus when the state meet takes place on the first weekend in June.

“We are hopeful to get at least three out to Columbus, and if we are healthy I am confident in the girls relay as well,” LaRocco said. “All in all our experience the state and regional level paid off. We were prepared for the schedule and what it takes to advance.

“Regardless of what happens Friday, this is an invaluable experience for the freshmen and sophomores.”
