Blue Devils shoot season-best 163 to win tri-match over Cardinal, West Geauga

    -

With the post-season rapidly approaching, Independence’s golf team is peaking at the right time.

    Nick Brunsman shot a 37

On Monday, the Blue Devils shot a season-best 163 to defeat Cardinal and West Geauga in a tri-match on the Maple Course at Fowler’s Mill.

“That was our best score of the year,” said Independence head coach Mark Echstenkamper. “That’s a solid score for all four of our guys. I’m very happy with that. Obviously, it’s time to get hot here in terms of the CVC tournament and sectional coming up.”

West Geauga scored 178 and Cardinal came in with a 198.

Independence was led by Tyler Wilson, who won medalist honors with a 36. Nick Brunsman carded a 37 and Alec Jendre and Joe Rydzinski both shot 45.

“I’m happy with Wilson and Brunsman,” Echstenkamper said. “They struggled the last week or so. I think they hit that point in the season where we’ve been playing a lot and they had a tough stretch, but they really played well.”

With the wins at Fowler’s Mill, the Blue Devils improved to 11-2 on the year.

“It’s been a solid season,” Echstenkamper said. “Obviously, our top two guys have been playing well and we had some guys step up at No. 3 and No. 4 to give us some good scores. Alec and Joe are usually two of the three coming in at 3 and 4 for us.”

Jerry Tamburro led Cardinal with a 43. Brian Schultz carded a 47, Danny Knippenberg fired a 53 and Tyler Carroll rounded out the Huskies’ scorecard with a 55. Joe Callison also competed for the Huskies.

“We have played with only five golfers all season and we haven't seemed to play well all at the same time,” said Cardinal coach Greg McCandless. “Jerry Tamburro played one of his best rounds today, especially tee to green, but Tyler Carroll, who has been our most consistent golfer all year, struggled.

“That's kind of how it has gone for us this year. Everyone has taken a turn shooting solid rounds, but we haven't all done it on the same day and with only five golfers we don't have much room for error.”

All three teams will compete in Wednesday’s Chagrin Valley Conference post-season tournament at Windmill Lakes in Ravenna.
