Brunsman, Wilson lead Blue Devils past Red Raiders

    -

The back nine at Painesville Country Club is known as one of the most challenging courses in Northeast Ohio. That didn’t stop Independence’s Nick Brunsman from carding one of his best scores of the year in leading the Blue Devils to a 187-222 win over Harvey on Monday.

Nick Brunsman shot a 38 on a challenging course

Brunsman managed the course well to finish with a match best 38.

“That’s a really good score on that course,” said Independence head coach Mark Echstenkamper. “He played smart and hit some great shots and putted really well. He never got himself into trouble. He hit his fairways and greens. He just played really well. His ball striking was dead on today.”

Independence’s No. 1 golfer Tyler Wilson finished with a 43, but with a little luck could have scored much lower.

“He had probably four putts that lipped out that could have gone either way,” Echstenkamper said. “He was real close to having a good round.”

Alex Jendre also put together a solid round for the Blue Devils as he finished with a 49, despite an injured right middle finger.

“He gutted it out,” Echstenkamper said. “A 49 on that course is really not a terrible score for him. He’s been up around 46, 47 or 48. He can do better and once the finger heals he’ll be down in the lower 40’s where he belongs.”

Echstenkamper still hopes to get a consistent score out of his fourth golfer, especially with a key Chagrin Valley Conference match looming against Kirtland on Tuesday at Astorhurst.
