Cardinal’s boys’ golf team snatched victory from the jaws of defeat at Wickliffe on Thursday.
The Huskies edged the Blue Devils, 202-203, at Pine Ridge Country Club thanks to the score of their No. 5 golfer, Mitchel Samas, who came in two strokes better than Cardinal’s No. 4 golfer to provide the margin of victory.
“That was pretty awesome,” said Cardinal coach Glenn Travers. “We had a 204 and they had 203 after the (first four golfers came in) but we still had the fives and sixes on the course. Our five came in with a 56, which put us at 202 instead of 204. The other kids were kind of celebrating already and when he came in with a 56 our team kind of went crazy. That was fun. It was a fun day.”
Cardinal’s Jonathan Heredos claimed medalist honors with a match-low 41.
“He stepped it up a bunch,” Travers said. “He shot 36, one over par, the other day at practice when we shot 165 as a team. That’s unheard of. That’s the best I’ve experienced as head coach over here.”
Kevin Hammitt added a 52 and Anthony Sinito closed out the scoring with a 53. Cameron List and Daniel Heredos both shot 58 for the Huskies.
“We have the potential to shoot in the 40s with our top five,” Travers said. “It’s looking good. The sixth has the potential to get in the 40s too. He shot 49 in practice the other day, so the team has really come together.”
Andrew Michalski led the Blue Devils with a 46 while Calvin Cackowski (49), Mario Cefaratti (51) and Robbie Veri (57) also scored for Wickliffe.
“This match came right down to the wire,” said Wickliffe coach Mike Cackowski.
