Eight area teams sit in first-round bye positions entering Week 7

The postseason picture is beginning to take shape.

And several area teams have put themselves in prime position.

The Ohio High School Athletic Association released its latest football computer ratings Tuesday, with eight area teams currently sitting among the top four in their respective regions and 20 area programs positioned inside the top-12 playoff field.

The final computer ratings will be released Oct. 25. The top 12 teams in each region qualify for the playoffs, while the top four seeds receive first-round byes.

With four weeks remaining in the regular season, every result — and every result by a defeated opponent — can reshape the standings.

Mentor holds No. 2 spot in Region 1

Mentor Football remains firmly in the upper tier of Division I, Region 1.

The Cardinals are 5-1 and sit second with 15.5025 computer points, trailing only Lakewood St. Edward.

Mentor currently owns one of the four first-round bye positions.

Euclid Football is also inside the playoff field. The Panthers are 3-3 and ranked No. 11 with 5.8333 points, putting them just inside the top-12 qualifying line.

Mayfield, North unbeaten but outside top four

Two undefeated area teams are positioned back-to-back in Division II, Region 5.

Mayfield Football is 6-0 and ranked fifth with 12.3167 points, while Eastlake North Football is also 6-0 and sits sixth at 12.0667.

That leaves both programs securely inside the playoff field but, for now, just outside the top-four bye positions.

Villa Angela-St. Joseph Football is seventh at 4-2 with 8.7667 points.

Two more area programs are currently above the playoff line. Riverside Football is No. 10 at 3-3 with 6.7374 points, while Brush Football sits 11th at 3-3 with 6.2333.

South and NDCL occupy bye positions

Division III, Region 9 has one of the deepest concentrations of area teams.

Willoughby South Football remains unbeaten at 6-0 and is ranked second with 13.2167 points.

Right behind the Rebels is Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin Football.

NDCL is 5-1 and third with 11.3182 points, giving the area two teams currently positioned to receive first-round byes.

Hawken Football also is in strong position. The Hawks are 4-2 and fifth with 10.1167 points.

Lake Catholic Football sits 11th at 3-3 with 8.0333 points and currently owns one of the final two playoff spots.

Three more area teams are immediately outside the qualifying field.

Kenston Football is 13th at 3-3 with 7.7 points, Gilmour Academy Football is 14th at 3-3 with 7.5808, and University School Football is 15th at 4-2 with 7.15.

With Lake Catholic at No. 11 and Kenston at No. 13, Region 9 figures to be particularly important to watch during the final month.

West Geauga sits second in Region 13

West Geauga Football has positioned itself for a first-round bye in Division IV, Region 13.

The Wolverines are 5-1 and ranked second with 12.2333 points.

Edgewood Football is also on the playoff side of the line. The Warriors are 4-2 and ninth with 7.9333.

Orange Football enters Week 7 at No. 15. The Lions are 3-3 with 4.2167 points and will need to make up ground during the final four weeks to climb into the top 12.

Perry leads Division V, Region 17

No highlighted area team enters Week 7 with a better regional position than Perry Football.

The Pirates are 6-0 and sit atop Division V, Region 17 with 14.0167 points.

Perry is one of five undefeated teams among the 27 programs highlighted in the OhioVarsity coverage area and currently holds the region’s No. 1 seed.

Conneaut Football has also built a strong postseason position. The Spartans are 5-1 and ranked seventh with 9.55 points.

Chagrin Falls Football is 4-2 and sits 11th with 5.9833, putting the Tigers inside the playoff field entering Week 7.

Kirtland, Wickliffe both in top four

Division VI, Region 21 features two area teams currently holding first-round byes.

Kirtland Football is 5-1 and ranked second with 10.7833 points, just behind South Range’s 10.835.

The margin between the first two positions is only 0.0517 computer points.

Wickliffe Football, meanwhile, has turned its 6-0 start into the region’s No. 4 position. The Blue Devils have 8.8333 points and currently hold the final first-round bye.

Two other area programs remain within striking distance of the playoff field.

Grand Valley Football is 4-2 and ranked 13th with 5.798 points — one place outside the qualifying field.

Richmond Heights Football is 3-3 and 15th with 4.85 points.

Cuyahoga Heights sits third in Region 25

Cuyahoga Heights Football also occupies a coveted top-four position.

The Red Wolves are 5-1 and third in Division VII, Region 25 with 5.9667 computer points.

Independence Football is currently positioned for a postseason berth as well. The Blue Devils are 3-3 and ranked ninth with 3.8167 points.

Fairport Football sits 14th. The Skippers are 1-4 with 2.1778 points and remain outside the top-12 field entering Week 7.

Eight teams currently holding first-round byes

If the season ended with the Sept. 29 ratings, eight highlighted programs would receive a first-round bye:

Perry — No. 1, Division V, Region 17
Mentor — No. 2, Division I, Region 1
Willoughby South — No. 2, Division III, Region 9
West Geauga — No. 2, Division IV, Region 13
Kirtland — No. 2, Division VI, Region 21
Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin — No. 3, Division III, Region 9
Cuyahoga Heights — No. 3, Division VII, Region 25
Wickliffe — No. 4, Division VI, Region 21

The larger number to watch, however, may be 12.

Twenty of the 27 area programs highlighted in this week’s ratings currently occupy a playoff position.

Seven sit outside the field: Kenston, Gilmour Academy, University School, Orange, Grand Valley, Richmond Heights and Fairport.

Grand Valley is the closest of that group at No. 13 in Region 21, while Kenston also sits 13th in Region 9.

With four regular-season games still to be played, the computer ratings remain far from final.
