Esper sets single-game scoring mark in all-star setback

PEPPER PIKE–Independence’s Erica Esper scored a game-high 23 points but it wasn’t enough as the Navy All-Stars outlasted the Army, 70-51, on Sunday in the 2019 Ohio Varsity Senior Shootout at Ursuline College.

Esper’s 23 points set a new single-game scoring mark by any girl in the event’s four-year history and she also smashed the record for 3-points in a game by draining seven shots behind the arc. The previous record was four.

Despite Esper’s effort, the shorthanded Army All-Stars didn’t have enough firepower to counter the Navy who saw three different players score in double figures.

Andrews-Osborne’s Nike Humeniuk felt right at home in her future gymnasium as the Ursuline College signee scored a team-high 18 points to lead the Navy All-Stars to the win. Kenston’s Rayonna Peterson added 16 points and Harvey’s Nevada Melton contributed to the win with 12.

Mentor’s Cassie Sellers pitched in with nine points, Chardon’s Danni McCartney added eight, Hawken’s Zee Johnson finished with three and Kenston’s Kate Taylor and Berkshire’s Shaelin DeLong each scored two points for the Navy.

Orange’s Casey Smith also scored in double figures for the Army All-Stars as she finished with 11 points. Perry’s Anna Sorine finished with eight, Cardinal’s Camille Cummins pitched in with seven and Fairport Harding’s Ryann Hagedorn scored two.
