With low numbers and a lack of experience, the Grand Valley girls’ track team hopes to overcome the odds stacked against it this spring.
Head coach Kurtis Fisher is confident his squad will show consistent progress as the season progresses and his new athletes gain confidence.
“We are a very young team and are looking to grow as the season progresses,” Fisher said. “We feel that with the returning athletes, coupled with the young (ones), we can compete well. We are low on numbers but we focus on competing every day and work to get better.”
The Mustangs are focused on individual growth and if all goes well, they could be in the hunt to compete for the Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division title.
“Our expectations for the year are to be competitive in the Valley Division and have some strong individuals who can score well and place high in the meet,” Fisher said.
Grand Valley’s strength lies in the field events.
“We have the most experience in the jumps and throws and will look to lean on those returning athletes to lead the team,” Fisher said. “With senior Maggie Waldo returning as an athlete that was able to qualify to the regional meet last year in the high jump, long jump, and pole vault, we look to lean on her experience to lead the team. She is a hard-working young lady and I feel that she has the ability to take the next step this year. Sophomore Lora Oscar has the potential to take the next step and be a key contributor in the throws. We also look to have freshman Anna Steimle step in and give us a boost in the distance events.”
