Hawken and Kirtland took control of their respective divisions in the Chagrin Valley Conference by winning titles at the league preseason tournament at Pine Hills Golf Course in Hinckley on Thursday.

The Hawks won the Chagrin Division by carding a score of 313, 16 strokes ahead of second place Chagrin Falls, and Kirtland edged second place Beachwood by just one stroke, 357-358.

“That was a great start for us,” said Hawken coach Bert Kovarik.

Drew Covilt shot a 72 to claim medalist honors for the Hawks while Jack Gole and Tommy Hill both shot 79 to finish tied for second. Thomas Wong rounded out the Hawken scoring with an 83 to finish seventh.

Orange’s Kyle Haddon finished fourth with a 79 and Chagrin Falls’ Luca Opperman and Clark Reboul tied for fifth with an 81. Perry’s Nick Carnovale and Chagrin Falls’ Scotty McCormack both shot 83 to finish tied for seventh and Chagrin’s Harrison White rounded out the top 10 with an 84.

Beachwood’s Drew Schnee shot a Valley Division low 72 to win medalist honors but Kirtland finished with three golfers among the top seven to edge the Bison for the team title.

“That was awesome,” said first-year Kirtland coach Sam Kless. “I’m real proud of the kids.”

Jack Dever carded an 84 to finish fourth for the Hornets while Adam Mueller was sixth with an 86 and Seann McGill was seventh with an 89. Zach Szymczak rounded out the scoring for Kirtland with a 98, good for 13th place.

“I was really happy for Zach especially,” Kless said. “Even though he shot (98), he’s a sophomore and we’ve got a couple younger kids as well. He’s leaning on the seniors and the other kids are as well and the seniors are showing them the way. That’s how we’re going to build a program at Kirtland.”

Kless, a PGA pro in Northern Ohio, has only been with the Hornets for about a week. He implemented some changes in swing mechanics and the players quickly adapted.

“I fully expected to go out and win it,” Kless said of the tournament title. “I’ve only been working with them for a little over a week now and I’m really proud of them for hanging in there, especially Adam and Jack as leaders of the team. I made a couple swing changes and they’ve really worked hard on it. The future really is exciting.”

Berkshire’s Forrest Kuchling finished second with a 78 and Beachwood’s Nate Burke was third with an 83. Independence’s Carson Bianco finished fifth with his 85 and teammate Tyler Sagi was eighth with a 90.

Cardinal’s Jonathan Heredos fired a 93 to finish ninth and Cuyahoga Heights’ Justin Lambert rounded out the top 10 with a 94.
