    Hornets blank Columbia

    -

Marko Cubela scored two goals to lead Kirtland to a 4-0 nonconference win at Columbia on Monday.

Cubela scored in the 15th and 47th minutes to lead the Hornets to the win.

“I think we did a great job distributing the ball throughout the field which helped us acquire the W,” Cubela said. “(Tuesday) night we have to come in with the same energy and mentality we have had all season to make it a good competitive game.”

The Hornets, who improved to 11-2 on the year, travel to Geneva on Tuesday with the Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division title on the line. Both teams are 5-0 in conference play.

Peter Vukovic scored with three minutes left in the first half to increase Kirtland’s lead to 2-0 and Lance Dolovacky added a goal two minutes later to give the Hornets a 3-0 advantage at the break.

Cubela closed out the scoring with his second goal midway through the second half.

“The first goal, I beat the last defender and slid the ball under the keeper to the right corner,” Cubela said. “The second goal, I got crossed the ball from Paul from the side and hit the ball in the upper 90.”

Kirtland was ranked fifth in the latest Ohio High School Scholastic Soccer Coaches’ Association Division III state poll, but the Hornets aren’t letting that lofty ranking affect their play.

“I don’t think any of us care that we are fifth in the state,” Cubela said. “I think we just have to keep the same mentality for every game no matter who our opponent is.”
