With the rash of injuries college football teams have incurred early in the 2015 season the hashtag #NextManIn has become a rallying cry of sorts.
For the Kirtland Hornets, it was a bit different.
With Michael Knezevic sidelined with an injury head coach Greg Cosimi called Isabel Anness up from the JV squad. The Hornets then went out and won the Chagrin Valley Conference postseason tournament by 14 strokes over Hawken, who still won the overall league title. Kirtland finished third overall while Independence was second.
“This is an excellent result for our team,” Cosimi said. “Winning the tournament was awesome and playing well at a difficult course at this time in the season is even better. We have our eyes set on Pine Hills.”
Pine Hills is the setting for next week’s sectional tournament.
Michael Schnur continued his dominance of the CVC by sweeping medalist honors at both the preseason and postseason tournaments. He birdied two of the first nine holes to finish with a 75 on Monday to beat Independence’s Tyler Wilson by eight strokes.
Schnur was named MVP of the league for the second consecutive season.
“Michael Schnur absolutely took over,” Cosimi said. “He was the medalist of the day and he earned CVC MVP honors for the second year in a row in his sophomore year. Wow.”
Brian Beres shot an 89 to earn first team all-conference honors and Adam Mueller finished with an 87 to earn a spot on the second team. Daniel Heimsoth carded a 95 and Jack Dever shot 98. Anness finished with a 116 in her first varsity competition.
