    Huskies wrap up 2014 season

Cardinal’s golf team battled the elements in Monday’s Division II sectional tournament at Quail Hollow Golf Course but fell short of advancing to next week’s district tournament.

Led by Jerry Tamburro, who shot a team-low 94, the Huskies combined to shoot 415. Tyler Carroll was second on the team with a 98, Brian Schultz finished with 104 strokes and Joe Callison and Danny Knippenberg carded a 119 and 125, respectively.

“It wasn’t the greatest of conditions,” said Cardinal head coach Greg McCandless. “It was cold and wet and the rough was pretty tough, but the bottom line is we competed really well. I’m pleased with that.”

Tamburro and Carroll played consistently throughout the season.

For both, it came down to making putts and that’s where they struggled.

“Jerry hits the ball really well but it always comes down to his putting all year long,” McCandless said. “He didn’t putt really well today. He was striking the ball pretty well but to get out of the sectional you’ve got to make putts. I don’t think he made too many today. It was the same thing with Tyler. When I saw him, he was hitting the ball pretty solid I just don’t think we made many putts today, certainly not enough to put us in consideration to get out as individuals.”

The three individuals who advanced to the district tournament shot 75, 78 and 80.

As a team, the Huskies performed well throughout the season and identified the areas for improvement.

Throughout the season, each player had his moments. McCandless hopes to see them put together consistent rounds in the future.

“Jerry and Tyler have been pretty consistently our best players all year long,” he said. “The other three have been up and down. The inconsistency hurt us. They’ve all put up good rounds; we just seem not to be able to do it at the same time.

“They compete real well. I’m always pleased with how they play and the integrity they have.”
