Independence claims big win over Avon Lake

    -

Independence’s golf team claimed one of its biggest wins of the season on Monday.

The Blue Devils capitalized on a strong team performance to beat host Avon Lake at Sweet Briar Golf Club, 176-183.

“That was a big win for us,” said Independence coach Karl Schuld. “We were very pleased. We are doing the things we need to do.”

Depth proved to be the difference as all six Independence golfers shot 52 or better and five of the six broke 50.

Sophia Trombetta finished with a 39 while Lyndsay Blum carded a 42 and Madeline Mindzora shot a 47. Bryleigh Wise and Maddie Harper both finished the round with a 48 and Kaylie Kemenyes closed the day with a 52.

“I think they’re pushing each other,” Schuld said. “For all of them to shoot 52 or better and five of the six to shoot in the 40s or 30s that’s a leap from where we were last year. At this time last year we were in the 190s or 200s and here we are down in the 170s. That’s just a lot of growth by kids who are working really hard.”

Schuld was pleased with the win over the Division I program but he continues to focus his players on bettering their own scores and enjoying the competition rather than worrying about beating their opponents.

“The bottom line is with us we’re just trying to get better and play good teams and play on good courses,” he said. “I don’t really ever talk to them about winning and losing. I just talk about going out and competing and putting up a good score and having fun. The rest takes care of itself.”

Independence improved to 3-0 in dual matches. The Blue Devils host Perry on Tuesday in a key conference match.

“That could very well be for the conference championship,” Schuld said. “It should be a really good match.”
