INDEPENDENCE—Kyle Zygmunt threw three touchdown passes and returned a punt for another touchdown as Independence rolled to a 42-12 non-conference win over visiting East Tech at Alumni Field at Stan Skoczen Stadium on Friday.

Following back-to-back shanked punts, the Blue Devils found themselves in East Tech territory on their first two offensive possessions.

It was on the second series that Zygmunt threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Max Tarnowski. Casey McGhee added the extra point to put the Blue Devils on top 7-0 with 5:02 left in the first quarter.

Luke Pascarella ran for a five-yard touchdown early in the second quarter to push the Blue Devil lead to 14-0.

East Tech returned the ensuing kickoff into Independence territory and Jordon Huff capitalized on the field position with a five-yard touchdown run to cut Independence’s lead to 14-6 with 6:22 remaining in the half.

Tech forced an Independence punt but David Jedrzejek recovered a fumble near midfield and Rory Corrigan caught a screen pass and raced 48 yards for a touchdown on the next play to push the lead to 21-6.

Cy Jolliffe recovered McGhee’s onside kick at midfield and Zygmunt threw what appeared to be a 25-yard touchdown pass to Pascarella but that scoring play was erased by a penalty. Zygmunt responded with a 35-yard TD pass to Tarnowski on the next play that left the Blue Devils on top at halftime, 28-6.

Corrigan added a 10-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and Zygmunt returned a punt 53 yards for another score.

Huff closed out the scoring with a two-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

Independence, who improved to 2-1, travels to Cuyahoga Heights on Friday to open Chagrin Valley Conference play. That game will be streamed on CVC TV.
