Independence wins CVC postseason tournament title

    - Advertisment -

CONCORD–Independence is one step closer to winning a league championship after claiming the Chagrin Valley Conference Metro Division postseason title on Monday at Quail Hollow Golf Course.

The Blue Devils shot a 345 to beat second-place Beachwood by 18 strokes.

“I was very pleased,” said Independence coach Mike Marcinko. “That’s a tough course. The nice thing is the conditions were so much better this year than last year. It was brutal last year. I know the guys said the greens were absolutely lightning-fast and very hard to read and deal with.”

Led by co-medalist Mark Pillar, Independence had four golfers finish among the top 10, and all six placed among the top 22.

Pillar shot an 80 to tie for first place with Beachwood’s James O’Neil. Sam Coddington (84) placed fourth, Charlie DeCapua (86) was sixth, and A.J. Marcinko (95) finished 10th. David Eichler (100) and Joey Spacagna (109) finished 16th and 22nd, respectively.

“We had four guys in the top 10 so we were keeping the ball in play and giving ourselves chances,” Coach Marcinko said. “I cannot complain.”

Normally, the Blue Devils would have played a practice round prior to competing in the conference championships but the best Marcinko could do this fall was to schedule the Blue Devils for another challenging course to prepare them for the challenge of playing at Quail Hollow.

“We couldn’t get out to Quail this year for a practice round but we had played an independent game against Aurora at Barrington and we treated that as our practice round because the greens were going to be difficult and quick and the course was going to be tough,” Marcinko said. “Hopefully, that paid off a little bit because the courses we play on, although nice, they’re not Quail. You try to find something that will expose them to the difficulties that would like ahead.”

Independence now has won both the preseason and postseason conference tournaments. The Blue Devils are 7-1 in league dual matches and now await their fate as the regular-season duals will be completed this week.

Beachwood and Independence both have a shot at winning the overall conference title and Pillar and O’Neil are leading the points total for the Metro Division MVP award.
