Independence wins fifth straight CVC title

NEWBURY—Independence locked up a fifth straight Chagrin Valley Conference title by winning the league’s postseason tournament on Tuesday at Punderson Golf Course.

The Blue Devils won the Chagrin Division with 366 strokes. Chagrin Falls placed second with 366.

“It was fun,” said Independence coach Marty Hyland. “The course was a little firmer than it was when we were out here last week, but it was fun to watch the girls adjust. They didn’t start out as strong as they wanted do, but they calmed down and it turned out pretty good.”

Molly McGreal claimed medalist honors by shooting a tournament-low 80. Macey McGhee placed second with 86 strokes, Adriann Buyansky shot a 97 to place ninth, and Maria DeCapua closed out the scoring with 103 strokes, good for a 10th place tie.

Linna Si (114) and Callia Shumay (120) also played for the Blue Devils.

Independence will return to Punderson next week for the sectional tournament and playing well at the CVC tournament is a confidence booster as the Blue Devils embark on another run toward the state tournament.

“We’re going to go into sectionals with the same mindset and to just have fun,” Hyland said. “We’re not too worried about setting school records or anything like that—that might be a pie in the sky—so individually, it’s just go out and play the best you can and take it one shot at a time.”
