    Kirtland rides Zschuppe to win at Independence

    INDEPENDENCE—Erika Zschuppe scored five goals in a game for the third time this season in leading Kirtland to a 5-1 win at Independence on Tuesday.

    Zschuppe, Ohio’s reigning Division III Player of the Year, scored two goals in the first half as the Hornets built a 2-0 lead.

    Independence’s Alex Adams cut the Kirtland lead in half when she split four defenders and made a move before slotting her shot into the upper left corner of the net with less than two minutes remaining in the first half.

    The goal was the 21st of the season for Adams.

    Zschuppe handled all of the scoring in the second half as she scored three more times to finish off the win. She now has 36 goals in 14 games.

    With the win, Kirtland improved to 8-3-3 overall while Independence dropped to 6-5-2. The Hornets host Madison on Thursday. Independence hosts Berkshire.
