    - Advertisment -

Kirtland overcame a halftime deficit to defeat visiting Andrews-Osborne Academy on Saturday, 59-49.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 10-2 overall and ran their winning streak to six straight games.

“It was a good overall effort,” said Kirtland coach Shawn McGregor. “We came out slow at the beginning of the game, but we made some adjustments and played a great second half.”

Andrews-Osborne’s Teo Suarez scored four points in the first quarter and seven in the second to help the Phoenix take a 32-22 lead into halftime.

The Hornets limited him to just five points in the second half and flipped the script on Andrews by outscoring them 37-17 in the final 16 minutes.

“We did a great job of sharing the basketball and forced some turnovers to get the transition game going,” McGregor said of the second half.

Kirtland’s offense found its groove in the third quarter thanks in large part to Vince Carriero, who posted a game-high 19 points and he converted 5-of-6 free throws in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Will Sayle contributed to the win with eight points, Gino Blasini pitched in with seven, Jake LaVerde and Jack Green both scored six points, Aaron Fortuna added four, Nick Barisic and Danny Alfieri scored three, Aiden Hurd finished with two, and Will Burt scored one point for the Hornets.

“Vince played a nice game overall, and Jack Green and Gino did a great job of rebounding the basketball against a well-coached, tough team,” McGregor said. “I’m proud of the team’s effort.”

Suarez led Andrews with 16 points.

Kirtland travels to Beachwood on Tuesday.
