North wins second straight conference game

    - Advertisment -

After playing nearly full three seasons without a conference win, North recorded its second straight Western Reserve Conference victory by defeating visiting Riverside on Tuesday, 4-1.

The Rangers led 2-0 at halftime and responded to a Riverside goal with two more to seal their victory.

“Winning another conference game just further shows that this North team is full of heart, and grit, and just reinforces all the work we have done,” said North coach Samantha Richter.

Michaela Herbert broke a scoreless tie when she dribbled into the goal box and was fouled. She then converted the penalty kick for a 1-0 lead.

Brennen Herbert then made it 2-0 before Riverside cut its deficit in half with an early second-half goal.

“When they cut the lead in half, we did respond and quickly changed our formation to pick up some of their key players in the middle,” Richter said. “We went more defensive, and even in doing that were able to capitalize on through balls that led to goals. We talked about how the 2-0 lead is the most dangerous and deceiving lead, so once they saw that first goal, they knew they needed to respond.”

    Respond they did.

Maddie Flick restored North’s two-goal lead and Michaela Pingstock closed out the scoring with North’s fourth goal of the night.

With the win, North improved to 8-5-3 overall and 2-2 in the WRC. The Rangers close out the regular season on Tuesday against rival South.

The Ranger win guaranteed a winning season for the first time in over a decade.

“What has been so key about our team is that many of our players can easily play multiple positions,” Richter said. “Having options in terms of goal scoring has really opened up our offense and it’s really starting to click at the right time as we head into the postseason.”
