Athletes from Kirtland, Lake Catholic, Lutheran West and Mayfield have been named the Ohio Varsity Players of the Week.
Each player was nominated by his or her coach.
All statistics incurred during the week beginning Jan. 13 and ending Jan. 19.
Here’s a look at each Player of the Week by sport:
BOYS BASKETBALL
School: Lake Catholic
Grade: 12
Stats: Scored 37 points with 19 rebounds, three blocks and two steals in a win over Gilmour
Coach’s Quote: “Luka has been an absolute constant for us,” Lake Catholic coach Matt Moran said. “He does everything for the team and he stepped up big versus Gilmour.”
GIRLS BASKETBALL
School: Kirtland
Grade: 11
Stats: Scored a career-high 11 points with eight deflections and three steals in a key CVC game
Coach’s Quote: “Leah is one of our top defenders because of her quick hands and feet,” Kirtland coach Brittany Zele said. “She gets better every day on both ends of the floor and developing into a fearless leader.”
School: Lutheran West
Grade: 12
Stats: Averaged 13.0 points with three steals and she shot 64-percent from behind the arc (7-for-11)
Coach’s Quote: “Paris has really found her shot as of late,” Lutheran West coach Trey Senney said. “She has been extremely effective from beyond the arc to add to her hoop attack and transition game. She is a huge asset at both ends of the floor.”
School: Mayfield
Grade: 12
Stats: Scored 51 points with 19 assists, 18 rebounds, 15 steals in three games
Coach’s Quote: “Catherine had an outstanding week as the driving force behind three wins,” Mayfield coach Ryan Looman said. “She stepped up when her team needed her most and in doing so broke a school record (for assists in a career).”
