Riverside cruises to win over Mayfield

One day after edging visiting Mayfield by two runs, Riverside won the season series over the Wildcats in dominating fashion on Wednesday, 11-0.

With the win, the Beavers improved to 11-0 overall and 4-0 in the Western Reserve Conference.

“Today, we were a lot more focused to begin with and we knew we had to come out strong to beat Mayfield,” said sophomore Megan Lehner, who recorded two hits and knocked in four runs in the win.

Riverside managed nine hits in Tuesday’s 4-2 win over Mayfield and had just three more in Wednesday’s game but the Beavers were more effective in pushing runs across the plate in the second matchup with the Wildcats.

Two big innings were the difference on Wednesday.

Riverside scored six runs in the top of the second on six hits and a hit batsman.

Emily Lamos, Delaney Keith, Maren Kelly, and Molly Binkiewicz all singled before the Wildcats recorded the first out of the inning. Abby Watson the singled and Lehner knocked in two runs with her base hit.

The Beavers invoked the run-rule with a five-run fifth inning.

Amanda Kolar and Lamos kicked off that rally with back-to-back singles. Kolar scored on a wild pitch and Kelly doubled home Lamos. Binkiewicz and Katie Ross then hit singles and Lehner hit a bases-loaded double to close out the scoring.

“I went up to the plate just looking for base hits to put runners on,” Lehner said. “It helps boost my confidence when I can help the team and today I was able to that.”

Lamos went the distance in the circle. She allowed three hits in five shutout innings and struck out five.

Riverside travels to Lake Catholic on Thursday.
