Skoczen paces Independence at Gilmour Invitational

Junior Emily Skoczen finished 20th overall to lead the Independence girls’ cross country team to a sixth-place at the 2018 Paul Primeau Invitational at Gilmour Academy on Friday.

The Blue Devils placed 14th in the boys’ race.

“At this point in the season, it’s really beneficial to know how you stand place-wise against schools,” Skoczen said of competing against quality competition. “I was really happy with placing in the top 20 and the team placed high as well.”

    Skoczen finished in 26:34.

Sophomore Makenna McGhee was close behind as the finished 24th in 21:52. Erica Esper and Sonia Sajovie also finished among the top 40. Esper was 34th in 22:15 and Sajovie was 39th in 22:36.

Sophomore Collin Patton paced the boys’ team with a 53rd place finish in 18:59.

The Blue Devils will compete in the Legends Meet this weekend then begin the postseason with the Chagrin Valley Conference meet at Cardinal on Oct. 13.

“I think in order to place high at conference and advance through districts we each need to drop seconds from our times,” Skoczen said. “It’s a real confidence-booster to know our small team can compete against some high competition teams.”
