Independence’s Mallory Trombetta, Beachwood’s Hannah Kahn and Kirtland’s Michael Schnur are this week’s Ward’s Lawncare & Landscape Co. Players of the Week. Each turned in a strong performance last week and was nominated by his or her respective coach.
Mallory Trombetta Junior Independence High School
After helping Independence reach the Division III regional finals as a sophomore last season, Mallory Trombetta is at it again. Last week, Trombetta led the Blue Devils to wins over Cuyahoga Heights, Perry and Huron.
In a total of 12 games, Trombetta recorded 55 digs and her serve receive averaged over 2.10 (out of 3).
“Mal has great ball control and an ability to read the hitters and keep the ball off the floor,” said Independence head coach Megan Osysko.
The Blue Devils are 7-0 and ranked 13th in the latest Ohio High School Volleyball Coaches’ Association Division III state poll.
Hannah Kahn Junior Beachwood High School
Kahn was instrumental in Beachwood’s 4-3 win over Cuyahoga Heights last week.
She scored a goal and saved another to lead the Bison to their first win over the Redskins in quite some time.
“Both actions were phenomenal and decisive in impacting the game’s final outcome,” said Beachwood coach Tom Fowler. “Hannah's save from the goal line inside the goal was an almost impossible volley which decisively cleared the threat. In addition, she sent a rocket into the net during a corner kick situation having pushed up from the back third.”
Michael Schnur Freshman Kirtland High School
The younger brother of former Kirtland standout John Schnur, Michael has big shoes to fill and he’s off to a great start.
He’s been one of Kirtland’s top players all season and in two matches last week he averaged 39.5 strokes. He fired a 39 in a 173-193 win over Cardinal and followed that up with a 40 in a 159-170 loss to Gilmour Academy.
"It's great to have a golfer like Michael on the team. He shoots low scores, and he has the unquantifiable attributes that a successful team golfer needs," said Kirtland coach Greg Cosimi. "He's always positive and he fights hard for his scores."
Schnur has averaged 38.5 strokes per nine holes and 80.7 strokes per 18 holes this season.
