The first full week of the 2014 high school sports athletic season got underway and already athletes across Northeast Ohio are turning in outstanding individual efforts.
Beachwood’s Tamarea Townes, Cardinal’s Lester Troyer and Independence’s Thomas Hockenberry were named Ward’s Lawn Care & Landscape Co. Players of the Week for their individual efforts during the week ending Aug. 31.
![]() | Tamarea Townes After winning just five games last season, Beachwood’s volleyball team is off to a 3-1 start and Townes certainly has contributed to that success. In two games last week—a win over Cleveland Central Catholic and a five-set loss to Kirtland—Townes recorded 16 kills, 4 aces, 6 blocks and 13 digs. Through four games, Townes is second on the team with 24 kills, 11 blocks and 19 digs. |
![]() | Lester Troyer Cardinal’s football team opened the 2014 season with a dominating 34-14 win at Garrettsville Garfield. In the win, Troyer was a one man wrecking crew. He scored on first half touchdown runs of 56 and 21 yards and also sacked the quarterback and hurried him several other times. He finished the day with 5 carries for 84 yards. |
![]() | Thomas Hockenberry There likely wasn’t a bigger clutch performance in Week 1 of the high school football season than the one Hockenberry turned in to lead Independence to a 40-35 come from behind victory over Columbia on Friday. The loss snapped Columbia’s 19-game regular season win streak. Hockenberry completed 19-of-32 passes for 285 yards and four touchdowns (42, 75, 14, 7), including the game winner to Austin Buc with just eight seconds left in the game. |
