VASJ rolls over John Adams in tune-up for showdown at Kirtland

    -

Needless to say, Villa Angela-St. Joseph has been very impressive to open the 2015 football season.

Now it is time for the youthful Vikings to show just how much they have grown up in two weeks as a date with powerhouse Kirtland awaits in Week 3.

After a 41-0 rout of John Adams on Sept. 4, VASJ is 2-0 on the year and has outscored two opponents by a combined score of 74-7.

Things get exponentially tougher when the Vikings travel to Route 306 to take on Kirtland – the defending Division VI state runner-up and two-time state champion – on Sept. 11. The Hornets will not come into the game in a good mood as Kirtland’s 56-game regular-season winning streak came to an end with a loss to Grand Valley in Week 2.

VASJ will come into the game on a roll, especially on offense. The Vikings scored 28 points in the first quarter against the Rebels and essentially put the game away prior to halftime. Super sophomore Jerry Higgins, who had three rushing touchdowns in a win at Genoa in Week 1, had three more scores on the ground vs. John Adams.

Sophomore QB Aubrey Shabazz and tight end Jacob Stauffer started the scoring for VASJ by hooking up for a 42-yard TD pass and a 7-0 lead. Higgins had a pair of short TD runs and LaRon Jones also found the end zone to put the Vikings on top, 28-0, at halftime.

Higgins rans for his third score of the night and sixth of the season in the third quarter, and Howard Hill put a cap on the VASJ scoring barrage with a touchdown run in the fourth quarter.

The Vikings defense has been stellar, allowing 7 points in 8 quarters and holding John Adams to less than 200 total yards of offense.
