Freshmen Sylvia Vosicky and Ainsley Borthwick both recorded top 25 finishes in leading Kirtland to seventh place at the Avon Lake Early Bird Invitational at Lorain Community College on Saturday.

Vosicky placed 10th overall with a time of 22:19 and Borthwick came in 21st in 23:27.

“I was very excited and surprised to be in the top 25,” said Borthwick. “It was a hard course with the very steep hill. I’m happy with my time. It’s actually my PR. I do know I could do better though.”

Borthwick, who opened her career with a time of 23:35 at the Riverside Kickoff Classic Night Invitational a week ago, made some adjustments to her race strategy in her second high school meet.

“I’ve learned that you need to keep a steady pace so you don’t lose all your energy in the beginning and I like to look at the course beforehand to know which parts I may need to work harder on and kick it,” she said.

Stephanie Drazetic (23:58), Delaney Kuczkowski (24:44), Jessy Jackson (26:09), Josie Copeland (27:06), and Brynn Bradac (27:39) also ran for the Hornets.

Kirtland’s boys’ team didn’t score as a team but Brigham Weight did finish among the top 50 runners. He placed 48th in 19:54, a new personal best.

Jeremy Mrva (23:07), Warren Eveland (23:23), and Daniel Booth (28:17) also competed for Kirtland.
