Eastlake North Girls Soccer: Flick breaks scoring record, hopes to inspire next generation

Rangers senior Maddie Flick surpasses a mark held by her former kindergarten teacher, Jennifer Berardinelli Tompkins, and prepares for one final postseason run.

Eastlake North senior Maddie Flick broke a school scoring record held by her former kindergarten teacher, Jennifer Berardinelli Tompkins. With 43 goals this season, Flick hopes her legacy will be about more than the goals she scored.

grew up looking up to Jennifer Berardinelli Tompkins.

First, Tompkins was her kindergarten teacher. Years later, she became the standard Flick hoped to reach on the soccer field.

Now, the senior has written her own name into the Rangers’ record , surpassing the school scoring mark held by the woman who helped shape her childhood.

Flick broke the record during North’s 12-0 victory over Lorain on Oct. 12, adding another milestone to an outstanding senior season that has helped establish her as one of the area’s most productive offensive players.

“I cannot express how beyond grateful I am to have beaten the record,” Flick said. “Yes, I feel so accomplished and proud of myself, but I could not have done it without my amazing coaches, Sam, Coyne, Erin and John, and my best friends Michaella, Sophia and Mallory.”

The accomplishment carries an especially personal connection.

“The previous record-holder was actually my kindergarten teacher,” Flick said. “Not only did she have me, but also my four younger siblings, so she has played a big role in my life.”

Tompkins continued her playing career at Ashland University, giving Flick an example of what she could accomplish through hard work and dedication.

“I really look up to Mrs. Tompkins,” Flick said. “Not only was she a great in high school, she was an outstanding player at Ashland University as well. Having someone to push myself to be like has really carried me through my career. I’m so grateful for her and all of her support.”

Flick entered her senior season determined to put herself among the best players in school history.

After scoring 22 goals as a junior, she set her sights on North’s single-season scoring record of 36 goals. Her stated goal was to reach 40.

She has accomplished both.

Flick enters the postseason with 43 goals and 12 assists for 98 points, helping North finish the regular season 10-7.

Her production has included several memorable performances, including a career-high six goals in an 8-7 victory over Riverside on Aug. 27.

But Flick’s impact extends beyond her scoring totals.

A team captain, she has embraced the opportunity to serve as a leader and mentor to North’s younger players, something she discussed before the season when she spoke about the relationships she had developed with the Rangers’ incoming freshmen.

Now, with her name in the record books, Flick hopes those relationships will become an even more meaningful part of her legacy.

“Being a person and reason that any young girl dreams to be like, works harder, or believes in herself more means more than any record will,” Flick said. “I don’t want to be remembered for just the goals I scored, but for the girls I inspired to go out and score their own.”

It’s a fitting perspective for a player whose own ambitions were influenced by someone who came before her.

Just as Tompkins gave Flick a standard to pursue, Flick hopes the next generation of Rangers will see her accomplishments as something they can achieve — and eventually surpass.

For now, however, Flick has more soccer to play.

The 19th-seeded Rangers open the Division II Northeast 7 district tournament Tuesday at 18th-seeded North Canton Hoover. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

North enters the postseason having scored 94 goals in 17 regular-season games, with Flick providing much of the offensive firepower.

The Rangers will face a Hoover squad that enters the tournament at 6-9-1. The Vikings have experienced their own share of challenges against a demanding schedule, and the postseason presents a fresh start for both teams.

Flick knows opponents will be focused on limiting her opportunities, but she isn’t allowing the additional attention or the possibility of playing her final high school game to change her approach.

“My approach for our upcoming playoff game is to play smart, hard, and have so much fun,” Flick said. “It may or may not be the last game of my high school career, and I plan to give it my all, no matter the attention.”

Flick has already committed to Ursuline College, where she plans to continue her soccer career while pursuing a nursing degree.

That next chapter is approaching, but she’s not ready to close the book on her time at North.

Her name is already part of the school’s soccer history.

What matters most to Flick is what the next generation chooses to do with the inspiration she leaves behind.
