CVC TV: Conneaut brings perfect start into Kirtland

Unbeaten Spartans chase their first 5-0 start in 41 years against a Kirtland program that has won 19 straight games on its home field

Conneaut brings a perfect 4-0 record to Kirtland for Friday’s CVC TV Game of the Week, chasing its first 5-0 start in 41 years against a Hornets team that is 115-6 at home since 2006.

is chasing something it hasn’t accomplished in 41 years.

has spent nearly two decades making sure opponents rarely accomplish much of anything on its home field.

Those storylines collide Friday night when unbeaten Conneaut visits defending Division VI state champion Kirtland in a key Valley Division matchup.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the CVC TV Game of the Week.

Conneaut enters 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Valley Division. Kirtland is 3-1 and 1-0.

Spartans chasing history

A 4-0 start has been rare territory for Conneaut.

OhioVarsity.com’s football history, which dates to 1972, shows only two previous Spartans teams reaching 4-0.

Both won their fifth game.

The 1983 Spartans defeated Ashtabula 35-14 to reach 5-0 and eventually completed a 10-0 season.

Two years later, Conneaut defeated Edgewood 10-2 to reach 5-0. That team also completed a 10-0 regular season before falling to Cardinal Mooney in the playoffs.

Conneaut hasn’t started 5-0 since.

Friday gives the Spartans an opportunity to become just the third Conneaut team since at least 1972 to open with five straight victories — and the first since 1985.

Coach has guided the Spartans to the doorstep of that milestone with an offense averaging nearly 28 points per game and a defense that has yet to allow more than 17.

Conneaut opened with a 20-13 road victory over Cuyahoga Heights before rolling past Jefferson, 50-6. The Spartans followed with a 20-17 win at Edgewood and opened Valley Division play last week by beating Berkshire, 21-12.

Conneaut put away the Badgers with a late touchdown to improve to 4-0.

Dobran leads athletic Conneaut attack

Quarterback  gives Conneaut a dual threat behind center.

Dobran has thrown for 531 yards and rushed for another 197 through four games.

He also has an experienced option in the backfield in , a multi-year starter.

The Spartans have size and athleticism on the outside as well.

The receiving corps includes 6-foot-3 , 6-1 and 5-10 , giving Dobran multiple targets in a passing game that could be important against a Kirtland defense accustomed to forcing opponents out of their comfort zones.

Conneaut has passed every test through four weeks.

Friday represents a significant jump in difficulty.

Welcome home

For the first time this season, Kirtland gets to play on its home field.

The Hornets opened against Taft in a neutral game at Ridgewood Generals Stadium before playing three consecutive road games at Poland, Perry, and Rootstown.

Home has been exceptionally kind to Kirtland.

The Hornets have won their first home game of the season 20 consecutive times dating to 2006.

Since the start of that 2006 season, Kirtland is 115-6 at home.

The Hornets’ most recent home loss came Sept. 1, 2023, when Perry defeated Kirtland, 24-6.

Kirtland has won 19 consecutive home games since.

That creates quite a historical collision Friday.

Conneaut is trying to start 5-0 for the first time in 41 years.

Kirtland is trying to win its 21st consecutive home opener while extending one of the region’s longest-running examples of home-field dominance.

Hornets respond to lone loss

Kirtland has experienced a little bit of everything during its 3-1 start.

The Hornets opened with a 51-6 win over Taft before surviving a 36-34 road test at Poland.

Their lone loss came Sept. 4 when unbeaten Perry defeated Kirtland, 31-10.

The response was emphatic.

Kirtland traveled to Rootstown last week and opened Valley Division play with a 50-7 victory.

The Hornets have scored 147 points through four games, an average of 36.8 per contest.

History also shows how rarely a Kirtland team with one loss takes another.

Since 2006, the Hornets are 34-4 in games they entered with exactly one loss.

At home in those situations, Kirtland is 13-1.

Ground game presents numbers problem

Kirtland’s offense remains grounded in a rushing attack capable of attacking a defense with several different players.

leads the Hornets with 390 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.

has added 257 yards and four touchdowns, while quarterback has rushed for 169 yards and thrown for 134.

The production isn’t limited to those three.

has rushed for 137 yards, and has added 105, giving the Hornets five players with more than 100 yards on the ground through four weeks.

That depth creates a numbers problem for opposing defenses. Taking away one option does not necessarily take away Kirtland’s running game.

Up front, two-way starter anchors the offense at center and has been disruptive on defense with a team-high six tackles for loss.

That group will face a Conneaut defense that has surrendered just 48 points through four games.

Rankings add another layer

There will be plenty of computer points at stake Friday, too.

Conneaut currently sits No. 3 in the unofficial Division V, Region 17 Harbin standings with a 7.5500 average.

Only Perry and Barnesville are ahead of the Spartans.

Kirtland is No. 7 in Division VI, Region 21 with a 5.5000 average.

The Hornets also carry the more prominent state ranking, checking in at No. 4 in Division VI in the latest Associated Press poll with 50 points and two first-place votes.

Conneaut received 12 points in the Division V poll and is among the teams receiving votes.

MaxPreps has Kirtland No. 27 in its Cleveland rankings with a 53.59 rating, while Conneaut is No. 72 with a 42.80 rating.

The various systems measure teams differently, but both programs have plenty to gain Friday as the playoff picture begins to develop.

Four years, two different paths

The current senior classes have traveled dramatically different roads.

From the beginning of the 2023 season through games completed entering Sept. 18, Kirtland is 48-3.

That stretch includes state championships in 2023 and 2025.

Last year’s championship was Kirtland’s eighth, joining titles won in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2023.

Conneaut is 15-20 over that same four-season span.

But this season has quickly changed the direction of the Spartans’ story.

The road-and-home split further illustrates Friday’s challenge.

Conneaut is 9-8 on the road since the start of the 2023 season.

Kirtland is 20-1 at home over that same stretch.

Unbeaten visitors have challenged Kirtland before

Conneaut is not the first undefeated team to arrive this deep into a season with hopes of knocking off Kirtland.

Since 2006, Kirtland is 7-2 against undefeated opponents in regular-season games played after Week 4.

Both losses came against Cuyahoga Heights — 20-10 in 2009 and 21-0 in 2016.

Conneaut gets its opportunity Friday.

The Spartans won’t simply be protecting a perfect record. They are trying to take an early lead in the Valley Division race, strengthen an already strong position in Division V, Region 17, and reach a milestone the program hasn’t touched in four decades.

First meeting on Sept. 18

For everything both programs have accomplished over the years, Friday brings something new.

According to OhioVarsity’s football history database, which dates to 1972, Conneaut and Kirtland have never met.

Friday appears to be the first football game between the Spartans and Hornets in the recorded histories of the two programs.

The date itself carries a little history.

Conneaut is 2-3 in games played on Sept. 18 since 1972.

The Spartans’ most recent game on the date came in 2020, when they defeated Edgewood, 22-13.

Kirtland is 1-2 on Sept. 18, with its lone victory on the date coming in a 21-7 win over Beachwood in 1980.

Neither program has played on Sept. 18 particularly often.

They have never played each other at all.

That changes Friday night.

Conneaut arrives undefeated and looking for its first 5-0 start since 1985.

Kirtland returns home as the defending Division VI state champion with 19 consecutive victories on its field.

One program is chasing history.

The other has spent years creating it.

For the first time, they’ll have to go through each other.
