, Garrettsville Garfield Football, , and are the four undefeated teams among Friday’s area contenders.

Meanwhile, Canton Central Catholic and University School advance into the regional quarterfinals following separate eligibility rulings that dramatically reshaped their playoff paths.

There are plenty of individual stars, too.

South quarterback has thrown for more than 2,300 yards, Wadsworth quarterback Brysen Hall has surpassed 2,800, and Kirtland’s leads a powerful Hornets rushing attack.

At 7 p.m. Friday, those numbers will matter only as much as the performances that follow.

A look at the historical numbers

The Ohio Varsity Football Almanac, which contains recorded results dating to 1972, offers an additional perspective on the postseason.

Kirtland leads the area with 16 recorded Week 12 victories without a loss. Mentor is 14-3, Cuyahoga Heights 13-5, and Perry 10-3.

Hawken and Mayfield also appear among the area’s historical Week 12 leaders.

Friday’s calendar date brings its own interesting records. Kirtland is 5-2 in recorded games played on November 6, while Cuyahoga Heights is 6-3 and Mayfield is 4-1. Mentor, despite its outstanding Week 12 history, is 3-4 on November 6.

Those are different historical measurements: Week 12 records reflect the designated schedule week, while November 6 records reflect games played on that specific calendar date regardless of week.

All head-to-head records below reflect meetings available in the Ohio Varsity historical database, not necessarily complete all-time series histories.

Brookfield at Kirtland

Division VI, Region 21 quarterfinal

  • Records: Brookfield 8-3; Kirtland 9-1
  • Location: Wilson Stadium, Kirtland
  • MaxPreps: Kirtland No. 2 in Division VI
  • OV Predictor: Kirtland 72%, Brookfield 28%
  • Projected Score: Kirtland 25, Brookfield 20
  • Recorded Head-to-Head: Kirtland leads 1-0
  • Historical Week 12: Kirtland 16-0

History has been kind to Kirtland in Week 12.

The Hornets have won all 16 games designated as Week 12 in the Ohio Varsity historical database, including a 27-17 victory over Brookfield in the 2015 playoffs.

Eleven years later, the programs meet again with another regional semifinal berth at stake.

Kirtland has won seven consecutive games since suffering its only loss against Perry in Week 3. During that winning streak, the Hornets have allowed just 17 points and recorded four shutouts.

The offense remains built around a deep rushing attack.

Tommy Caimi has accumulated 1,162 rushing yards, while has added 611 and 501.

Quarterback has thrown for 315 yards and four touchdowns in the available statistics, giving the Hornets another way to attack defenses that crowd the line of scrimmage.

Defensively, has emerged as a disruptive force with 12 tackles for loss and six sacks in the reported statistics.

Brookfield, however, arrives with momentum after dominating Columbiana, 49-0, in its playoff opener.

Quarterback threw three touchdowns and added a long scoring run in the victory.

, who has rushed for 1,220 yards and 18 touchdowns this season, remains the centerpiece of the Warriors’ ground attack.

Receiver Cruz Torres caught two touchdown passes against Columbiana and gives Brookfield a dangerous target in the passing game.

Coach will need his offense to produce more consistently than Kirtland’s recent opponents.

Brookfield’s previous meeting against Garrettsville Garfield, a 21-13 loss, demonstrated that the Warriors can compete with strong defensive teams.

Kirtland’s recent defensive performances, playoff experience, and multiple rushing weapons give the Hornets the advantage.

  • Historical note: Kirtland is 5-2 in recorded games played on November 6.
  • On Deck: Winner faces Jeromesville Hillsdale or Mineral Ridge.

Conneaut at Garrettsville Garfield

Division V, Region 17 quarterfinal

  • Records: Conneaut 10-1; Garfield 10-0
  • MaxPreps: Garfield No. 8; Conneaut No. 34 in Division V (Conneaut ranking from Oct. 31)
  • OV Predictor: Garfield 75%, Conneaut 25%
  • Projected Score: Garfield 29, Conneaut 23
  • Recorded Head-to-Head: Garfield leads 2-0

The most historic season in history continues with another major challenge.

Conneaut Football earned its first playoff victory in school history last Friday with an 18-12 overtime win over Chagrin Falls.

Trailing 12-0 at halftime, the Spartans rallied behind quarterback Wyant Dobran and versatile playmaker Steven Kessler.

Kessler scored the tying touchdown on a 32-yard screen pass and caught the winning 17-yard touchdown in overtime.

An interception by ended Chagrin Falls’ final possession and secured the victory.

Coach now takes his team on the road to face an undefeated Garfield squad that already owns two postseason victories over Conneaut in the recorded series.

The G-Men won 48-21 in 2022 and 56-13 in 2023.

Conneaut has been considerably more productive offensively this season.

Dobran has thrown for 1,526 yards and 21 touchdowns, while has contributed to a balanced rushing attack.

Garfield counters with a punishing ground game.

Ryder Cain has rushed for 1,365 yards and 21 touchdowns, while has added 855 rushing yards and 13 scores.

McGranahan has also thrown for more than 600 yards, giving Garfield a dual-threat dimension.

supplies another explosive option and scored on a 46-yard run in Garfield’s 21-13 victory over Brookfield.

That result provides an important comparison. Garfield defeated Brookfield by eight points, while Conneaut will attempt to produce a different result against the same unbeaten opponent.

Garfield has held nine consecutive opponents under 20 points, but Conneaut has demonstrated that it can win games even when its offense struggles early.

  • Historical note: Conneaut is 2-2 in recorded games played on November 6.
  • On Deck: Winner faces Perry or Canton Central Catholic.

GAME CENTER

Dalton at Cuyahoga Heights

Division VII, Region 25 quarterfinal

  • Records: Dalton 5-6; Cuyahoga Heights 9-1
  • MaxPreps: Cuyahoga Heights No. 14; Dalton No. 16 in Division VII
  • OV Predictor: Cuyahoga Heights 77%, Dalton 23%
  • Projected Score: Cuyahoga Heights favored
  • Historical Week 12: Cuyahoga Heights 13-5; Dalton 2-1

Records alone do not tell the entire story of this matchup.

Cuyahoga Heights Football has won nine consecutive games since its season-opening defeat and has developed into one of the area’s most consistent playoff contenders.

The Red Wolves enter Friday after a 38-6 victory over Fairport Harding and bring a 13-5 record in historical Week 12 games into the quarterfinal.

Coach has a program accustomed to postseason pressure.

, meanwhile, enters with an unusual 5-6 record for a team still competing in November.

The Bulldogs played one of the most difficult schedules in Division VII during the regular season, and have been battle-tested against strong competition.

Dalton returned to form in last week’s 38-6 victory over Monroeville.

Quarterback threw touchdown passes to and Micah Miller, while Gage Stitt scored twice on the ground.

Hignight caught 10 passes for 147 yards in the first half alone.

The Bulldogs accumulated 423 yards of offense, including 237 passing and 186 rushing.

That performance showed the kind of balance Dalton will need against a Cuyahoga Heights team that has made defensive consistency a hallmark of its success.

Despite their different records, the teams are separated by only two places in the latest MaxPreps Division VII rankings.

For Cuyahoga Heights, protecting the football and preventing explosive plays will be critical. Dalton has enough postseason experience to take advantage if the Red Wolves provide opportunities.

  • Historical note: Cuyahoga Heights is 6-3 in recorded November 6 games and has won 13 of its 18 recorded Week 12 contests.

Eastlake North at Nordonia

Division II, Region 5 quarterfinal

  • OV Predictor: Nordonia 60%, North 40%
  • Projected Score: Nordonia 27, North 25
  • Recorded Head-to-Head: Nordonia leads 2-1

Two teams with 19 combined victories will meet in one of Friday’s most intriguing Division II contests.

is enjoying a breakthrough season.

The Rangers earned the first playoff victory in school history with a dominant 41-0 win over Brush last Friday.

scored four first-half rushing touchdowns as North accumulated nearly 400 rushing yards.

The Rangers’ defense was equally impressive, holding Brush to negative rushing yardage.

Coach has emphasized the importance of building a winning culture, and his team now has an opportunity to advance even deeper into the postseason.

The Rangers have several players capable of changing the game.

King Mattice leads the team with 791 rushing yards, while Fenick adds another dimension through his ability to run the football.

Defensive standout , the Chagrin Valley Conference Lake Division Defensive Player of the Year, has recorded 20 tackles for loss and seven sacks.

Nordonia’s offense presents a different challenge.

Quarterback has thrown for 2,234 yards and 24 touchdowns, spreading the football to a talented receiving corps.

has rushed for 528 yards, and has provided explosive plays on special teams.

Nordonia enters after a dramatic 42-33 regular-season finale against Wadsworth.

The Knights trailed 20-14 at halftime before scoring 28 second-half points. Barwidi returned a punt 77 yards for a touchdown, helping spark the comeback.

Coach has guided Nordonia to nine wins in his first season.

The teams have met three times in the available historical records. North won 38-20 in 1994, but Nordonia answered with victories in 1995 and 1996.

The model favors Nordonia, but North’s powerful running game and aggressive defense make this a compelling matchup.

Historical note: North is 2-2 in recorded November 6 games.

Few games on Friday’s schedule project to be closer.

The Ohio Varsity Matchup Predictor gives Notre Dame Cathedral Latin Football only a four-percentage-point advantage over .

The Lions are seeking their first 10-win season in school history after finishing the regular season 9-1 and claiming their first league championship since 2012.

Quarterback has thrown for 1,302 yards and rushed for 591, accounting for 25 total touchdowns in the reported statistics.

NDCL also features several defensive standouts.

Coach Sam Vander Ven has emphasized the value of a veteran defensive group that has developed together.

Hawken, meanwhile, arrives following one of the most exciting victories of the opening playoff round.

The Hawks defeated Howland, 36-29, in overtime behind five touchdown passes from .

Brandt threw for more than 300 yards, connecting repeatedly with and .

Mallett caught 15 passes for 241 yards and two touchdowns, while Oster scored three times, including the overtime winner.

Mallett has surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the second consecutive season.

Patrick Murphy also gives the Hawks an additional offensive weapon capable of contributing in multiple roles.

An interesting common-opponent comparison involves West Geauga.

Hawken defeated the Wolverines, 27-26, on September 10, while NDCL suffered its only loss against West Geauga, 7-0, in August.

The Lions’ defensive strength will be tested by one of the area’s most productive passing attacks.

Hawken’s challenge will be protecting Brandt and finding ways to create separation against a disciplined NDCL defense.

  • Historical note: No previous Hawken–NDCL meetings are recorded in the database dating to 1972. Hawken is 2-2 in recorded November 6 games.
  • On Deck: Winner faces Garfield Heights or Benedictine.

  • Projected Score: Perry 28, Canton Central Catholic 20
  • Recorded Head-to-Head: Perry leads 1-0
  • Historical Week 12: Perry 10-3

The most unusual playoff storyline of the week leads to a rematch in Lake County.

Canton Central Catholic’s season appeared to end with a 26-16 loss to Youngstown Liberty in the opening round.

Instead, the Crusaders received another opportunity after the OHSAA disqualified Liberty for using an ineligible player who wore an eligible jersey.

The Crusaders now travel to Perry, where they will face a team that defeated them 42-7 in the season opener.

Perry has been dominant throughout the fall.

Quarterback has thrown for 1,433 yards and 13 touchdowns while adding 10 rushing scores.

Running back has accumulated 736 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns.

contributes as both a receiver and defender, while has recorded 10 tackles for loss.

The Pirates have held each of their last 11 opponents under 20 points and enter Friday after receiving a first-round bye.

Their historical postseason record is equally impressive.

Perry is 10-3 in Week 12 games in the available archive and has won six consecutive recorded contests at this stage of the season since 2019.

The Crusaders have the benefit of an unexpected second chance, but reversing a 35-point regular-season loss will require a vastly improved performance on both sides of the football.

  • Historical note: Perry is 2-1 in recorded games played on November 6.
  • On Deck: Winner faces Garrettsville Garfield or Conneaut.

Strongsville at Mentor

Division I, Region 1 quarterfinal

  • Projected Score: Mentor 29, Strongsville 25
  • Recorded Head-to-Head: Mentor leads 21-4
  • Historical Week 12: Mentor 14-3

The rematch everyone in Mentor has been anticipating arrives Friday.

On October 2, Strongsville dominated Mentor, 56-30, ending the Cardinals’ 21-game Greater Cleveland Conference winning streak.

The Mustangs rolled up 604 yards of offense, including 360 rushing yards, while building a 28-10 halftime lead.

It was Strongsville’s first victory over Mentor since 2008 and its first in 20 recorded meetings.

Strongsville has continued to build momentum since that breakthrough.

Coach has guided the Mustangs to five consecutive victories, including a 32-0 shutout of Solon last week.

Running back has surpassed 1,000 rushing yards, while 6-foot-4, 300-pound junior lineman Faisal Abuhamdeh anchors the offensive line.

Mentor coach Matt Gray has made no secret of the significance of the rematch.

The Cardinals will be healthier at quarterback than they were during the first meeting.

Brogan Jones, who missed the October 2 contest, is back after throwing for 1,121 yards and seven touchdowns in the available statistics.

However, Mentor will be without running back , whose season ended because of injury.

will take over as the primary running back. He has rushed for 406 yards and five touchdowns.

The Cardinals also feature two productive receivers.

leads the team with 38 receptions for 661 yards, while has caught 25 passes for 434 yards.

Mentor has responded well to its loss, defeating Shaker Heights 42-3 and Euclid 31-0, with an administrative 1-0 result against Lorain between those games.

Strongsville’s ability to control the line of scrimmage was decisive in October. Mentor must reverse that advantage to reach the regional semifinals.

The Cardinals have more history on their side.

Mentor is 14-3 in recorded Week 12 games and has won six consecutive contests at this stage of the season.

The teams have split two previous recorded Week 12 meetings. Strongsville won 17-3 in 2008, and Mentor answered with a 33-0 victory in 2024.

  • Historical note: Mentor is 3-4 and Strongsville 3-3 in recorded November 6 games.
  • On Deck: Winner faces Austintown-Fitch or Canton McKinley.

  • OV Predictor: Salem 59%, University 41%
  • Projected Score: Salem 26, University 24
  • Recorded Head-to-Head: No previous meetings recorded since 1972

After more than a week of legal uncertainty, University School Football finally has a playoff opponent and a confirmed game date.

The Preppers will travel to Salem following a November 5 decision by the Eighth District Court of Appeals that allowed the OHSAA to enforce its disqualification of Cleveland Glenville.

The ruling cleared the way for University School to advance into the regional quarterfinal.

The Preppers enter on a two-game on-field losing streak after falling to St. Charles and Howland to end the regular season.

Nevertheless, their offense features several dangerous playmakers.

Quarterback has thrown for 1,847 yards and 17 touchdowns, according to the News-Herald’s updated statistics.

has rushed for 909 yards and seven touchdowns.

Receiver has caught 51 passes for 935 yards and also plays a major role defensively at safety.

Salem enters at 8-2 after averaging 29.2 points per game while allowing 24.2.

The Quakers rely on running backs and to establish their offense.

The teams share an interesting common opponent.

University School lost to Howland late in the regular season, while Salem defeated the Tigers, 28-14, in Week 8.

The Quakers have the home-field advantage and the stronger record, but University School’s offensive talent gives the Preppers an opportunity to make this a competitive game.

The legal uncertainty surrounding the opening round makes preparation particularly important for both teams.

  • On Deck: Winner faces Willoughby South or Youngstown Ursuline.

Wadsworth at Mayfield

Division II, Region 5 quarterfinal

  • Records: Wadsworth 9-2; Mayfield 10-0

An undefeated season meets one of the area’s most explosive passing offenses Friday.

Mayfield Football has started 10-0 for the first time since 2019 and enters the regional quarterfinal with a defense allowing just 9.2 points per game.

The Wildcats have been especially effective at disrupting opposing offenses.

The running game features and Ben Koret, who have combined for more than 900 yards.

Wadsworth’s offense presents a significant challenge.

Quarterback Brysen Hall has thrown for 2,837 yards and 30 touchdowns, with catching 62 passes for 1,094 yards.

The Grizzlies average 401 yards per game and have scored at least 24 points in eight consecutive contests.

rushed for 99 yards and three touchdowns as Wadsworth produced a season-high 200 rushing yards.

Hall completed 17-of-19 passes for 167 yards and two touchdowns while adding another rushing score.

Wadsworth had lost consecutive games to Medina Highland and Nordonia before returning to the win column in the opening round.

The Grizzlies must protect Hall and establish enough of a running game to prevent Mayfield from focusing entirely on the passing attack.

Mayfield’s defense has answered every challenge so far, but this could be its most difficult test of the season.

  • Historical note: Mayfield is 4-1 in recorded November 6 games and is seeking its first 11-0 start since 2019.
  • On Deck: Winner faces Medina Highland or Brecksville-Broadview Heights.

West Geauga won 18-6 in 1988 and 33-0 in 1989.

Their first recorded meeting in 37 years brings two nine-win teams together with a regional semifinal berth on the line.

The matchup could come down to whether West Geauga can establish its running game against Norton’s defense.

  • Historical note: West Geauga is 3-4 in recorded games played on November 6.

Friday’s biggest questions

Eleven games. Twenty-two teams. Eleven seasons will end.

The answers to several questions could determine how many area programs are still playing next Friday.

Can Brookfield become the first team to defeat Kirtland in a recorded Week 12 game?

Can Conneaut continue its historic postseason run against undefeated Garfield?

Will North’s rushing attack be enough to slow Nordonia’s explosive offense?

Can Hawken’s passing game solve NDCL’s veteran defense?

Will Mentor avenge one of its most disappointing regular-season defeats?

Can Wadsworth become the first team to solve Mayfield’s defense?

Will West Geauga reach 10 victories for the first time in 11 years?

And can Ursuline’s postseason experience end Willoughby South’s perfect season?

All 11 matchups offer different challenges, but the stakes are the same.

Win, and the season continues.

Lose, and the journey ends.
