CVC TV: Kirtland, Perry collide in the most anticipated game of the year

Unbeaten Kirtland visits unbeaten Perry in the CVC TV Game of the Week, a showdown of recent state champions and two of Ohio’s top teams.

There are big games on a high school football schedule.

Then there are games players circle months before the season begins.

at has become the latter.

The unbeaten Hornets and unbeaten Pirates meet Friday at 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium in the CVC TV Game of the Week, and everything surrounding the matchup suggests this is much more than an intriguing Week 3 football game.

It is the defending Division VI state champion against the 2023 Division V state champion.

It is the No. 1 team in the current Division VI, Region 21 Harbin standings against the No. 1 team in Division V, Region 17.

It is Perry, ranked No. 25 statewide by Drew Pasteur’s Fantastic 50, against Kirtland at No. 36.

It is a Perry team that has spent two weeks overwhelming opponents against a Kirtland program that has won eight state championships and enters Alumni Stadium riding a 54-game road winning streak.

And it is a rivalry that, in just the last three seasons, has produced a streak-snapping Perry victory, a three-overtime game decided by inches in a rainstorm and a Kirtland victory on its way to another state championship.

No wonder both teams have been waiting for this one.

When Kirtland Has the Ball

There is very little mystery surrounding what Kirtland wants to do.

Stopping it is another matter entirely.

Through two games, the Hornets have rushed for 662 yards and have multiple runners capable of turning a crease into a big play.

Caimi leads the way with 272 yards on 28 carries, averaging 9.7 yards per attempt, with four touchdowns.

Junior has been nearly as productive, rushing for 162 yards on 19 carries with four touchdowns.

The numbers become even more impressive when Kirtland’s depth is considered.

has 75 yards on three attempts. has added 58 yards on eight carries, while quarterback has rushed for 51 yards.

The Hornets overwhelmed Taft on the ground in the opener, then went to Poland and produced 412 rushing yards on 51 carries in a game in which their offense was forced to answer challenge after challenge.

Caimi carried 22 times for 238 yards and two touchdowns at Poland. Perko added 70 yards and two scores, Becker rushed for 58 yards, and Loncar added 46 yards and a touchdown.

The common denominator is Kirtland’s offensive front.

Senior , a four-year starter, anchors a unit that continues to create space regardless of who is carrying the football.

Kirtland coach called the offensive line dominant following the Poland win.

Perry may provide its toughest test yet.

The Pirates returned 10 starters on defense from last season and have allowed only 19 total points through two games.

Madison finished with 98 rushing yards in Perry’s 39-7 opening victory.

A week later, Perry dominated Kenston even more thoroughly. The Pirates outgained the Bombers 363-56 and held Kenston’s lead running back to 13 yards on 11 carries.

That sets up perhaps the game’s most fascinating confrontation.

Kirtland’s offensive front has imposed its will on nearly everyone it has faced.

Perry’s veteran defense has spent two weeks doing the same.

Something has to give.

The Hornets also have enough of a passing game to punish Perry for becoming too aggressive against the run.

Loncar has completed four of five passes for 54 yards and a touchdown. is 1-for-1 for 40 yards and a touchdown.

Kirtland has completed only five passes this season.

Two have gone for touchdowns.

That is the danger for Perry. Every defender knows where the primary threat is coming from, but one lost assignment can turn into six points.

When Perry Has the Ball

If Kirtland wants to make a defense defend every gap, Perry wants to make one defend every inch of the field.

Senior quarterback has been sensational through two games, completing 26 of 39 passes for 617 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions.

He has averaged 15.8 yards per attempt.

And there is no obvious receiver for Kirtland to take away.

has four receptions for 187 yards and two touchdowns.

has caught eight passes for 145 yards and two scores.

has nine receptions for 103 yards and a touchdown.

Perry showed what that collection of weapons can do almost immediately this season.

Trefzger threw for 318 yards and four touchdowns in the first half against Madison. He finished with 343 yards through the air in a 39-7 victory.

Krantz caught touchdown passes of 57 and 22 yards. Mechenbier turned a swing pass into an 85-yard touchdown. Richards caught a touchdown just before halftime.

A week later, Perry struck again.

Trefzger connected with Krantz for a 24-yard touchdown. Richards then took a handoff and threw a 58-yard touchdown pass to Mechenbier.

That play alone is a reminder that Kirtland has to account for more than Perry’s traditional offense.

Richards can catch it, run it, and throw it.

Then there is .

Hopkins gives Perry balance with 170 rushing yards through two games. Against Kenston, he broke an 80-yard touchdown run as Perry raced to a 38-0 halftime lead.

The Pirates do not need to throw on every down to create explosive plays.

That could become especially important after Poland found success against Kirtland’s defense last week.

After holding Taft to minus-3 rushing yards in Week 1, Kirtland surrendered 339 yards on the ground at Poland.

The Bulldogs repeatedly found the edge and forced the Hornets to fight through a 36-34 shootout.

Perry has certainly noticed.

But Perry also faces a Kirtland defense built around physical, experienced two-way players.

Cantini starts at middle linebacker in addition to his role on the offensive line. already has an interception this season after returning one for 58 yards against Taft.

The Hornets’ challenge will be different Friday.

They cannot sell out against Hopkins and leave Perry’s receivers isolated downfield. They also cannot sit back and allow Trefzger time to distribute the football.

Perry’s offense is built to punish whichever choice a defense makes.

The Battle Up Front

For all the explosive skill players on the field, Friday may be decided by the least glamorous part of football.

The line of scrimmage.

Kirtland has built its championship tradition there.

Perry’s defense has been dominant there.

And Perry’s biggest offensive question entering the season was there.

The Pirates returned just one starter on the offensive line, but that starter is All-Ohio lineman .

So far, the new-look unit has answered the challenge. Perry has scored 84 points in two games and has consistently created time for Trefzger and opportunities for Hopkins.

Kirtland will try to change that.

On the other side, Perry’s front will face a Kirtland offensive line that helped the Hornets rush for 412 yards without turning the ball over or punting at Poland.

That is why this matchup is more complicated than simply comparing Kirtland’s running game to Perry’s passing game.

Both offenses depend on controlling the line first.

The X Factor: Mother Nature

As if Kirtland-Perry needed another variable, Mother Nature may have one waiting.

The current forecast for Perry calls for cloudy skies and 73 degrees at the 7 p.m. kickoff, with only a 24-percent chance of rain. But the outlook becomes considerably more interesting as the night progresses.

The chance of showers rises to 42 percent by 8 p.m., followed by a 44-percent chance of scattered thunderstorms at 9 p.m. Thunderstorms remain possible through the remainder of the game.

If the forecast holds, the teams could begin the night in relatively good conditions and finish it in a very different environment.

That matters in a matchup featuring two offenses built in dramatically different ways.

Perry has been devastating through the air. Nate Trefzger has thrown for 617 yards and six touchdowns, with Brody Krantz, Greg Mechenbier and Traxton Richards giving the Pirates multiple downfield threats.

Kirtland, meanwhile, would have no problem if the game became a wet, physical battle.

The Hornets have rushed for 662 yards through two games and attempted just six passes. Their offensive identity is already suited for protecting the football, controlling possession, and grinding out yards when conditions become difficult.

But there is another twist.

Perry and Kirtland have been here before.

Their 2024 meeting at Alumni Stadium was played in a relentless rainstorm and turned into one of the most memorable games in the series. The teams battled through three overtimes before Kirtland escaped with a 22-21 victory on Jake LaVerde’s two-point conversion.

So neither sideline should be intimidated by a little rain.

Thunder and lightning, however, could introduce an entirely different problem.

A weather delay could interrupt momentum, force players to repeatedly warm back up and turn an already emotional night into an exercise in patience.

If the storms arrive, whichever team handles the changing conditions best may gain an advantage that has nothing to do with rankings, records, or championship banners.

Because in a game this evenly matched, one slippery football, one missed tackle, or one weather delay could change everything.

Two Coaches Who Wanted This Test

Neither coaching staff scheduled this game hoping for an easy September.

Quite the opposite.

LaVerde has said Kirtland intentionally loaded the early portion of its schedule with difficult opponents to expose weaknesses and prepare the Hornets for November.

Taft was first.

Poland pushed Kirtland to the final seconds.

Now comes Perry.

LaVerde has said these are exactly the types of games his program wants to play.

Gecewich feels the same way.

He is 1-4 against Kirtland, but his lone victory is one nobody around either program has forgotten.

The Pirates walked into Kirtland in 2023 and won, 24-6.

That night ended Kirtland’s 57-game regular-season winning streak.

Both teams eventually responded by winning state championships.

Perry captured the Division V title.

Kirtland won Division VI.

Two years later, both programs remain firmly in the championship conversation.

A Rivalry That Has Become Something More

Kirtland and Perry have a long football history, but the modern version of this rivalry has taken on a life of its own.

OhioVarsity.com’s recorded series history, which begins in 1972, has Perry leading, 18-15.

Kirtland has won four of the five meetings since the series resumed in 2021.

The lone Perry victory was a seismic one.

In 2023, the Pirates beat Kirtland, 24-6, ending that 57-game regular-season winning streak before both programs went on to win state championships.

Then came 2024.

In a driving rainstorm at Alumni Stadium, Perry and Kirtland played three overtimes.

The Hornets finally escaped with a 22-21 victory when quarterback Jake LaVerde scored on a two-point conversion by inches.

A year later, Kirtland won, 44-24, before eventually capturing its eighth state championship.

Now they meet again.

Kirtland has won two straight in the series.

Perry wants another signature victory.

And LaVerde believes this matchup has grown into something even bigger for his program.

That is a remarkable statement considering everything Kirtland has accomplished.

It also explains why Friday night feels different.

Home Field Advantage — and a Streak on the Line

Friday is Perry’s first home game of the season.

The Pirates opened with a 39-7 win at Madison and followed with a 45-12 victory at Kenston.

Now Alumni Stadium gets the game everyone has been waiting for.

Kirtland brings another remarkable streak with it.

The Hornets have won 54 consecutive true road games, excluding neutral-site contests, dating to a Sept. 4, 2015 loss at Grand Valley.

The last team to come close to ending that streak at Alumni Stadium?

Perry.

Two years ago.

Three overtimes.

One point.

A two-point conversion decided by inches.

That memory will not be difficult for anyone in the stadium to find Friday night.

How They Got Here

Kirtland

Kirtland opened the season with a 51-6 rout of Taft.

The Hornets scored 44 first-half points, rushed for 250 yards, and held Taft to minus-3 yards rushing.

Week 2 could not have looked more different.

Poland matched Kirtland score for score and rushed for 339 yards, but the Hornets answered repeatedly and survived, 36-34.

Kirtland rushed for 412 yards, gained 25 first downs and did not turn the football over.

Most importantly, the Hornets received exactly the kind of pressure test LaVerde wanted before heading to Perry.

Perry

Perry has not yet faced much fourth-quarter pressure.

The Pirates opened with a 39-7 victory over Madison after building a 29-0 halftime lead.

Trefzger threw for 343 yards.

A week later, Perry overwhelmed Kenston, 45-12.

The Pirates scored two quick touchdowns, led 38-0 at halftime and eventually built a 45-0 advantage before turning the game over to the reserves.

Perry has outscored its first two opponents, 84-19.

Kirtland will be a different level of challenge.

Gecewich knows it.

So do his players.

One More Time

Maybe Friday becomes another three-overtime classic.

Maybe one of these explosive offenses creates separation.

Maybe Kirtland’s running game controls the clock.

Maybe Trefzger and Perry’s receivers turn Alumni Stadium into a track meet.

Nobody knows.

That is why everyone wants to see it.

Two unbeaten teams.

Two No. 1 teams in their respective regions.

Two recent state champions.

One program trying to continue one of the most remarkable runs in Ohio high school football history.

Another trying to prove, once again, that it belongs on exactly the same stage.

Kirtland and Perry have spent the last few years turning an old series into one of Northeast Ohio’s must-see football games.

Friday night, they get another chance.

And this time, will be there for all of it.
