Friday Night Preview: Badgers, Red Devils meet at an early-season crossroads

Crestwood brings a surging ground game to Berkshire as two 1-3 Valley Division rivals renew a series separated by just one victory.

Crestwood and Berkshire enter Friday at 1-3, but both have shown signs of breaking through. The Red Devils bring a three-headed rushing attack to Burton, where the Badgers will try to extend a four-game winning streak in a series they lead 9-8.

Crestwood finally found the offensive breakthrough it had been looking for last week. Berkshire already has one dominant victory on its résumé but is trying to rebound from a tough league-opening loss.

On Friday night, one of them gets a chance to turn a 1-3 start into something more promising.

Crestwood Football travels to Berkshire Football for a 7 p.m. Valley Division matchup between two longtime opponents with plenty at stake.

A series that has swung both ways

Berkshire leads the all-time series 9-8, but the history between these teams has come in waves.

The Badgers won the first five meetings from 1982-95 before Crestwood ripped off six straight victories from 1996-2000. The rivalry returned to the schedule in 2020, and Crestwood won the first three meetings of that stretch, including a 22-21 victory in the opening round of the 2021 playoffs.

Since then, Berkshire has taken control.

The Badgers have won four straight regular-season meetings, including a 36-8 victory last fall. Berkshire also won 42-8 in 2022, 35-24 in 2023, and 23-14 in 2024.

Friday’s date comes with its own piece of history.

Crestwood is 7-1 all-time in games played on Sept. 18, while Berkshire is 4-3. Two of those Sept. 18 games came against each other, and Crestwood won both — 30-13 in 1998 and 42-28 in 2020.

Crestwood breaks through

The Red Devils enter Friday at 1-3 but are coming off by far their best offensive showing of the season, a 53-8 win over Independence. Crestwood opened with losses to Mogadore, Garfield and Mineral Ridge before breaking through in Week 4.

The running game gives Crestwood several options.

Sophomore leads the way with 400 yards and four touchdowns on 41 carries, an average of nearly 10 yards per attempt. Junior has rushed 53 times for 375 yards and three scores while also handling the bulk of the quarterback duties.

Junior has been just as efficient, turning 36 carries into 339 yards and four touchdowns.

Together, Hess, Kalista and Mory have accounted for 1,114 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns, giving the Red Devils three proven options on the ground.

Mory also has been one of Crestwood’s defensive leaders with 31 tackles, while senior has recorded 25 tackles.

Badgers looking to rebound

Berkshire’s 1-3 record has followed a different path.

The Badgers opened with a 27-22 loss at Harvey and fell 31-7 to Cuyahoga Heights before erupting for a 56-0 victory at Cardinal. Last week, Berkshire went on the road and stayed within striking distance of unbeaten Conneaut before falling 21-12.

Senior gives Berkshire a dual-threat option at quarterback. Miller has completed 32 of 59 passes for 408 yards and seven touchdowns and has added 139 rushing yards and three scores.

Sophomore has contributed on both sides of the ball with 70 rushing yards and a touchdown along with 17 tackles and a sack. has added a rushing touchdown and an interception defensively.

Early Valley Division stakes

Friday also carries early significance in the Valley Division race.

Berkshire is 0-1 in division play after its loss to Conneaut, while Crestwood enters its first Valley Division game. Conneaut, Chagrin Falls and Kirtland each won their league openers last week, leaving the Badgers with an opportunity to avoid an 0-2 start and the Red Devils with a chance to enter the race at 1-0.

Both teams also have ground to make up in the Division V, Region 17 playoff picture. Through Week 4, Crestwood sits 20th in the unofficial Harbin rankings with a 1.6750 average, while Berkshire is 25th at 0.8750. The top 12 teams in the region after Week 10 qualify for the postseason.

Something has to give

Crestwood arrives with a three-headed running attack coming off a 53-point night. Berkshire has won the last four regular-season meetings and gets this one at home.

The Badgers are trying to keep their recent control of the series intact. The Red Devils are trying to build on their first win of the season and continue a curious bit of Sept. 18 history that has treated them very well.

One way or another, a remarkably close 9-8 series is about to add another chapter.

The Ohio Varsity Matchup Predictor™ uses the previous three seasons as an early program-strength baseline, then shifts weight toward current-season record and PF/PA as results accumulate. Recent head-to-head results, strength of schedule, momentum and the longer recorded series provide additional context. An unfollowed team's missing data remains neutral instead of erasing known information about its opponent. Home field receives a small adjustment.
