The Harvey softball team left no doubt in its conference opener—and made history in the process.
The Red Raiders exploded for 16 runs in the first two innings on their way to a 17-6 win over visiting Lutheran West on Monday in a Chagrin Valley Conference Chagrin Division matchup. The victory improved Harvey to 2-0 and marked the 250th career win for head coach Betsy Hada.
“Getting a 17–6 win in our first conference game was a great start for us,” Hada said. “I thought we played with a lot of confidence and competed well across the board. It really showed what we can do when we’re playing together and having fun.”
Harvey seized control immediately after a quick defensive start, turning momentum into offense in a hurry. The Red Raiders plated eight runs in the first inning and matched it with another eight-run outburst in the second to build an insurmountable lead.
“After shutting down three batters in a row in the first inning, the momentum swung in our favor,” Hada said. “Once we got going at the plate, we scored eight runs, and that really set the tone for the rest of the game.”

The offensive surge was fueled by contributions throughout the lineup. Jayla Holloway led the way, going 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, three doubles, and a stolen base. Samantha Boykin added a 2-for-3 day with two runs and two RBI, while Giselle Moreno scored twice, drove in a run, and doubled.
Isla Barajas reached base twice, scored three runs, and knocked in two, while Vicky Lopez Soto finished with two runs and two RBI, along with two walks. Kim Aguayo added an RBI, and Payton Robertson reached base twice with two walks and scored two runs.
“Timely hitting, smart baserunning, and strong plays in key moments showed just what this team is capable of,” Hada said.
Robertson also delivered in the circle, earning the win with a five-inning performance. She allowed just two hits while striking out nine.
Lutheran West was led by Alexa Putka, who went 1-for-3 with a run and two RBI, and Leah Miller, who drove in a run. The Longhorns scored in four different innings, including a three-run fifth, but couldn’t overcome Harvey’s early outburst.
“Our first conference win is huge for our team,” Hada said. “It’s a reminder of our potential and gives us energy to keep building as the season goes on.”
