Led by Zane Drebus, who finished third at 152 pounds, Cardinal placed three wrestlers at the 2018 Audrey Genovese Memorial Tournament at Orange High School on Saturday.

Ryan Shanower and Jerry Rose both finished fourth for the Huskies.

“We wrestled pretty good team-wise,” said Cardinal coach Jeff Zeigler. “Unfortunately, we didn’t get the number of placers we’d like to have but a lot of guys were in position to place.”

Drebus dropped his 152-pound quarterfinals bout to Solon’s Danny Morlani, who finished second, then won three straight matches to finish third.

He recorded back-to-back pins in the consolation bracket and beat Chagrin Falls’ Enrique Mares, the second seed, in the third place match, 5-4.

“He probably had the best day of them all,” Zeigler said. “We always look at when they lose early in the tournament who they lost to and Zane is losing to quality kids. He’s had a great couple of weeks. We had a practice day this week, we named it Zane Day in honor of what he’s done.”

Shanower recorded three pins in finishing fourth at 120. He lost in the semifinals to the eventual champ.

“He’s really coming around,” Zeigler said. “He’s very powerful when he can stay focused and he comes up with some nice victories. He beats good kids. We’re just trying to get him on an even keel where he’s more consistent.”

Rose finished 2-2 at 145 with both losses to Newbury’s Mike Weston, a wrestler he beat at the 87 Rumble last month.

Weston won the quarterfinals matchup, 4-2, then beat Rose again in the third place match, 3-0.

“He wrestled him better in the second match but he’s not near where we need him to be yet,” Zeigler said. “Weston is a returning district qualifier and a senior and Jerry is toe-to-toe with him. Hopefully, we’ll get him when it counts at sectionals or districts or both. It’s nice to see he’s able to compete at that level as a freshman.”

Tim Baril was on his way to earning a place at 285 before a semifinals injury ended his tournament run.

Trevor Bachna finished 2-2 at 126, Paul Byler (132) and Gene Henry (138) both finished 1-2 and Devan Callison also competed for the Huskies at 195.

Cardinal returns to action on Saturday when the Huskies travel to Beachwood for the Division III sectional tournament.
