Kirtland brings more speed and slightly better pitching numbers, carrying a 2.84 team ERA and 188 strikeouts. Hillsdale counters with a stronger defense, posting a .955 fielding percentage compared to Kirtland’s .931 mark, while also slugging .417 as a team.
Both teams have also proven themselves against Rootstown baseball this season. Kirtland swept the Rovers during the regular season, while Hillsdale dominated Rootstown 7-0 earlier this week in tournament play.
Friday’s district championship has all the ingredients of a tight, postseason-style battle.
When Kirtland Is Up to Bat
Kirtland’s offense is built around pressure, speed, and consistent contact throughout the lineup.
The Hornets are led by standout hitter Lucci Cantini, who is batting .437 with 31 hits, nine doubles, two home runs, and a massive 1.249 OPS. Cantini has also reached base at a .573 clip and remains one of the most dangerous hitters in the region.
Sebastian Becker gives Kirtland another major threat offensively. Becker is hitting .379 with 25 hits, 18 RBI, 13 stolen bases, and a 1.017 OPS while serving as one of the team’s emotional leaders.
Kirtland’s depth continues with Chace Gron, who is batting .366 with 26 hits and 12 stolen bases, while Jack Turk is hitting .348 with 13 RBI. The Hornets also rely heavily on Ben DiFranco, whose 31 RBI lead the team.
The Hornets have stolen 76 bases this season and consistently force opponents into rushed defensive decisions.
That aggressive approach will be tested against a Hillsdale pitching staff led by senior ace Aiden Hoffman, who owns a 2.00 ERA with 67 strikeouts in 63 innings. Hoffman has limited opponents to a .162 batting average while helping lead the Falcons through the postseason.
Hillsdale also has another dangerous arm in Kael Lewis, who has posted a 3.29 ERA with 43 strikeouts in 34 innings while holding hitters below .200 against him.
Defensively, the Falcons may have an edge entering Friday. Hillsdale’s .955 fielding percentage suggests the Falcons rarely give opponents extra opportunities.
When Hillsdale Is Up to Bat
Hillsdale’s lineup may be the most balanced offense Kirtland has faced during the postseason.
The Falcons are batting .305 as a team with a .417 slugging percentage and have collected 218 hits this season. Hillsdale has also shown the ability to score in bunches during the middle innings, averaging 1.3 runs in the third and 1.4 in the fourth.
The offense starts with Knox Lewis, who leads the Falcons with a .407 batting average while collecting 33 hits and 22 RBI. Lewis has also posted a .931 OPS and consistently puts pressure on opposing pitchers by reaching base and driving the ball into gaps.
Kael Lewis gives Hillsdale another major offensive weapon. Lewis is batting .360 with 32 hits, 29 RBI, and six home runs while posting a massive 1.091 OPS. He also has 10 stolen bases and impacts the game in every phase.
Senior Brock Bower adds another dangerous bat in the middle of the lineup. Bower is hitting .337 with 29 hits, 17 RBI, and a .975 OPS while also leading the Falcons with 11 stolen bases.
Hoffman has contributed offensively as well, batting .275 with 22 hits and 14 RBI while stealing eight bases. Hillsdale also receives production from Eben Wilson-Mills, who is batting .328, and sophomore Carter Barrett, who owns a .389 on-base percentage.
Kirtland’s pitching staff, however, has been one of the Hornets’ biggest strengths throughout the season.
The Hornets carry a 2.84 team ERA and have struck out 188 batters in 170 innings behind ace Becker, who has dominated atop the rotation with a 1.98 ERA and 70 strikeouts across 46 innings. Becker’s ability to control the strike zone and generate swings and misses has anchored Kirtland throughout the postseason run.
Zack Freeburg has also delivered key innings with a 2.72 ERA, while Xavier Lasecki owns a 2.90 ERA and gives the Hornets another reliable arm capable of working deep into games.
If Kirtland controls Hillsdale’s power bats and avoids free passes, the Hornets have enough pitching depth to neutralize the Falcons’ offense.
