Kirtland tops Crestwood in Valley Division showdown

Three Hornets scored in double figures to lead Kirtland to a 46-35 Chagrin Valley Conference Valley Division showdown over visiting Crestwood on Wednesday.

With the win, the Hornets improved to 8-1 overall and 5-0 in league play.

“It’s always a good feeling to get the ‘W’, especially when we haven’t been our normal offensive self,” said Kirtland coach Brittany Zele. “It shows that we can overcome adversity.”

The Hornets led 16-15 at halftime despite struggling to find their groove on the offensive end.

“In the first half, we weren’t hitting our shots as much and we weren’t flowing as a unit, like usual,” Zele said.

Kirtland adjusted its defense at halftime and that pressure created several breakaway opportunities.

“We switched some things up on defense and offensively we were able to get some easy looks off the zone when they were in it,” Zele said. “Our ball movement was good and you could see the confidence the girls had in each other by the way they set one another up for open looks.”

Reilly Greenlee led the charge with a team-high 14 points. Macy McIntosh and Marissa Carmosino also scored in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Alex Rosson added five points and Emily Ridgeway and Corinne Greenlee both finished with two points.

“At one point, Reilly passed up an open look and Macy got the ball back, drove baseline, got it back to Reilly for a corner three, and shouted, ‘Shoot it,’” Zele said. “Reilly did, and made it. I loved seeing that.”

Hannah Ward scored a game-high 19 points to pace the Red Devils and Ava Mory pulled down a game-high nine rebounds as Crestwood out-rebounded Kirtland, 33-30.
